The timing for this book is quite interesting. It was first published in German last year - and was a SPIEGEL Bestseller. Very impressive - but only available in German... now it is finally available in English. With the murder of Kashoggi it's been a more popular topic, and there are other books available about Saudi Arabia - but none that really help you understand what life is actually like for Saudis and how to make sense of many confusing contradictions. Normally we hear news about Saudi when it involves terrorism or oil or other mayhem. This is not that kind of book. It's refreshing to read, it's not a political analysis, it's funny and entertaining and easy to pick up chapter after chapter. Great photos of the author in all kinds of places. This reporter from Germany takes you deep into the country, into peoples' lives and into their living and bedrooms. Very unusual. Critical, yes, but really more in search of the people who live there, who work there, raise their kids there and try to make ends meet and figure out how to deal with all the crazy changes. It's an exotic mix of experiences, for sure... fancy Saudi weddings, country fairs and back alleys to get her computer fixed, sipping home-made wine with guest workers. but she also dines with a prince (or two) - maybe even a Saudi Astronaut. Definitively NOT your typical Middle East Lecture. Much more an adventure, a story board and an exploration.The Audio book is also pretty good - during COVID I've been enjoying walking or doing errands while listening to books.
